Debbie Dougall, Womens Bible Training in Rwanda [excerpt]

Debbie spent her summer teaching English to the Rwandan women using the Bible. Read about her adventure and how God moved through her.

Here are her comments:

Well, I really don’t know how to begin!
This summer in Rwanda was such a joy!!! I would have to say the highlight
was getting to know the students in the Bible class but also Jeanne DArc,
Olivia, Solange (with child), John Bosco and JB (whom you know!)…… the
ERM office staff, my wonderful translator, cook, watchman and driver.
It was so special to be there in the office with these dear people who
have such a heart for the  job they do!  I admire their hard work and
dedication to the Lord and to ERM!
Olivia and Jeanne dArc have become such sweet sisters to me.  They and the
others took such good care of me that I told them I felt like a queen!
They insisted it was their African culture, but I know they went beyond
that with their kind attentiveness to what I might need so I could
concentrate on teaching and being prepared for the English classes.  I so
enjoyed our visits , their wise counsel and sweet friendship. It was such
an honor to be with them this summer!
My students, who were so committed to come every week day and in
the heat of the day, were all so lovable!  Oh, how I miss them and pray
that the Lord will bless them for their time in the Word of God, their
(Lord willing) expanded view of God.   I learned along with them such
wonderful things, foundational things…..the character/attributes of
God and the Bible as God’s revelation to all of mankind of
His remedy to our sin problem….oh it was so wonderful to have this
extended time in the Word, teaching such eager, students!
One of my students testified that now she understood what it meant to be
‘born again’ after the lesson on John 3.  This is the chapter where Jesus
explains it to Nicodemus, a teacher of the Old Testament using the stories
that he would know.
Also, I just received word via email that another student, one of the
young orphaned girls, is teaching a class of fourteen younger girls at
church! How cool is that!  I knew that these dear ladies, and the young
orphans would be great teachers after this summer. My hope was that they
would be teaching their own children and grandchildren too, just sharing
with others what they know to be true about God and His word.  This news
just made my heart so happy!!
Concerning the future, my husband just told me today that he thought I
should go back to continue!  Well, what a blessing this is!  You see he
was the one who sacrificed for me to be there in Rwanda all summer.  I
don’t know the future, but I do know that God will lead and guide me (us!)
step by step.  I also know from experience that there is such joy in
serving Jesus and being obedient to what He calls me to do!  Let’s glorify
His name for the things He has done!
